What are you going to do differently this year?
It’s the New Year, which means it is the perfect time to reflect on your life and where you want to improve. I think this is an activity you should be doing at all times throughout the year, but especially at the beginning when you feel renewed. There is a healthy way to do this activity though, because you do not want to go too extreme where it will backfire on you. There are so many times that I have set unrealistic resolutions and within a couple weeks, I have done more damage than good. I have found that I am most successful each year when I just focus on one behavior I want to do differently. By focusing on something smaller, it is more achievable and can make a greater impact.
We all know we want to eat healthier and work out more. Those are typical resolutions that people always want to focus on. This year, I encourage you to think deeper. What can you really start doing differently that will change your life for the better? It does not have to necessarily be directly tied to your weight loss surgery. However, I guarantee you, it will somehow come back to it. Perhaps you want to give yourself more time alone. You might think this does not affect your weight loss journey, but it certainly does. If your mind is not in the right spot, you will not be able to focus. Your mental health is just as important on this journey, so even if your one behavior is that you want to read more, I promise you that you will see this affect your overall health as well.
When you are trying to set your goals for the year, remember to think about how you are going to achieve them. If you want to stat doing something different, you have to stay consistent to be able to successfully make that change. After all, remember how hard this surgery was. It takes time to make something a new habit, so make sure you are patient with yourself. We like the same routine, so when it is changed, it can be difficult on us at first. If you want to spend less time on your phone, set a timer. Give yourself a certain amount of time on it every single day and then when that time is up, hold yourself accountable. If you truly want to see a difference, you must be honest with yourself.
This year, I encourage you to think outside of the box. Yes, I think you should always aim at making healthy choices when it comes to your nutrition and exercise. However, I really think you could see an even bigger change in your behavior if you focused on something different. You will see in the end how it all comes together for your greater health. Remember, this is a lifestyle change and you are constantly learning more about yourself and how you can be the best version of you. So, what are YOU going to do differently this year?
