Weight Loss Plateau: How to Stay Motivated and Start Losing Again

Everyone on a weight loss journey will likely hit a plateau at some point, and it can be discouraging. A weight loss plateau can slow your momentum, and the longer it lasts the more desperate you might feel. Will you ever start losing weight again?

This is one of the hardest parts of losing weight, but don’t give up! It happens to everyone at some point (in some cases it will happen more than once!), but it’s important to continue on your same path.

Eventually, you will start losing weight again, but here’s how you can get over the hump in the meantime:

How to Conquer the Weight Loss Plateau

Getting past the stagnant points in your weight loss can dishearten even the most motivated individuals. Consider the following tips when you start seeing your weight loss grinding to a halt:

Don’t Stress

It’s easy to stress about dieting and exercising without seeing results, but stress actually harm the process even more than the plateau. When you’re feeling stressed, you might make poor food choices or feel less desire to exercise. Also, the stress hormone cortisol may increase, which can cause weight gain. Try to relax and remember that plateaus aren’t forever.

Try New Exercises

Switch up your exercise routine to introduce your body to new movements. You might try to focus more on strength training to increase muscle, which can help to burn fat.

As you lose weight, your metabolism actually slows down. Building muscle can help to burn more calories at rest.

When you hit a plateau, you might be inclined to exercise longer and harder to compensate. But your body needs rest to rebuild tissues. Without enough rest, your body remains in overdrive and could be breaking down more than it’s healing. Take a few days off from exercise and see if it helps you jumpstart your weight loss.

Stick to Your Meal Plan

Skipping meals is a common go-to solution for restarting weight loss, but this can do more harm than good. Your body still needs adequate nutrition, especially if you’ve been exercising diligently and your body needs to rebuild. Focus on sticking to your healthy eating habits so you don’t make it worse. Your weight loss will eventually restart without cutting out nutrition.

Don’t Rely on the Scale Alone

The scale only tells part of the weight loss picture, yet many people still rely on it as the only chapter in your story. It’s important to also consider your BMI, the way your clothes fit, and the way your body looks in the mirror to see if you’re really moving the needle. Remember, muscle weighs more than fat, and the scale isn’t going to know the difference.

Reignite Your Weight Loss!

Don’t let a temporary plateau become permanent derailment to your weight loss goals. Everyone will experience a slow-down at some point, but you’re not powerless to reignite your weight loss. Put the above tips into practice and keep your eye on the goal - you’ll be on your way again before you know it.
